What is Tomato Extract?

Tomato belongs to the nightshade botanical family – a label given probably because some of the group’s plants tend to grow in shady areas and flower at night. It originated from Peru and was first cultivated by the Aztec civilization and later introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century.

Tomato is an excellent skin hydrator as it contains almost 95% water and has high levels of lycopene (an antioxidant) which helps to prevent sun damage. It’s also rich in vitamins C, E, B6, B1, B3 and B2 – important nutrients to nurture and preserve healthy and radiant skin.

Benefits of Tomato Extract:

In a 12-week single blind, randomized clinical trial, tomato extract was found to protect the skin from UV-induced erythema. This positive effect was attributed to the high levels of lycopene that neutralize free radicals, preventing them from damaging cells and causing photoaging. Tomato extract also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in treating acne and tightening pores.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes that can degrade the extracellular matrix which can cause skin aging by breaking down collagen. Tomato extract suppresses the expression and activity of MMPs in dermal fibroblasts (manufacturer of collagen). This helps to maintain collagen levels in the skin and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

A study on lycopene-rich tomato paste has shown the fruit to mitigate UV radiation-induced elevation in procollagen (pC)-I deposition and reduction in MMP-1. It was also established that lycopene levels were inversely correlated with skin roughness in 15 females and 5 males between the ages of 40 and 50. Those who had applied pastes with higher concentrations of lycopene saw lesser skin roughness and this hypothesis was further validated by subsequent research findings from the Institute of Experimental Dermatology in Germany.

Side Effects & Toxicity:

An extremely safe ingredient, tomato extract has no known toxicity in general use and is shown to be non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin.

Editor’s Note:

Lycopene is regarded as one of the most powerful antioxidants and studies have demonstrated its ability to fight breast, prostate and uterine cancers.
