What is Ergothioneine?
Ergothioneine is an antioxidant amino acid that occurs naturally in the body and is found in high concentrations around cells that are subjected to free radical damage. The body does not produce ergothioneine so it needs to be consumed and white button mushrooms contain the highest concentration of this nutrient.
Benefits of Ergothioneine:
Ergothioneine protects the skin from oxidation and DNA damage. It targets free radicals, particularly those caused by UV-induced skin damage. Antioxidants are substances that fight free radicals which are known to damage DNA and cause skin cell death. Free radicals contribute to the premature aging, cancer and heart diseases. Antioxidants like ergothioneine neutralize free radicals and potentially reduce and even prevent sun damage.
The nutrient shields the mitochondrial membrane against oxidation by transferring fatty acids into the mitochondria. It also helps skin to use oxygen more efficiently and produce more regenerative energy which contributes to the lowering of the formation of free radicals.
Ergothioneine is also known to reduce TNF-Alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor) – a stress signal cytokine – and lessen skin inflammation. It also helps interrupt and slow down the aging process caused by sugars, browned foods and alcohol.
Side Effects & Toxicity:
An extremely safe ingredient, ergothioneine has no known toxicity in general use and is shown to be non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin.
A study conducted by Penn State University showed that white button mushrooms have about 12 times more of the antioxidant than wheat germ.
